Work as if you live in the early days of a better nation
I did not read enough in 2022. Not listed here are all the non-fiction and short story collections I’ve dipped into for a chapter or two.
⭐ Titus Groan by Mervyn Peake. A hold over from 2021. Exceptional. This took me far longer to read than it should have. I am not qualified to or capable of describing how good this Dickensian novel is in a few sentences.
Sterling Karat Gold by Isabel Waidner. [In Progress] I’m probably not going to finish this. Just not had the energy/attention this year.
Arctic Dreams by Barry Lopez. Good, interesting, and ultimately a worth while read, but also lumpy when it came to keeping my attention. A lot of fascinating anecdotes from the history of arctic exploration, but occassionally went on a bit.
⭐ Light by M John Harrison. A reread while travelling. So good.
The Narrator by Michael Cisco. Heavy. I wrote about it.
The State of the Art by Iain M. Banks. A reread. Always enjoyable.
Tau Zero by Poul Anderson. Apparently a classic hard science fiction novel. It was fine.
Look to Windward by Iain M. Banks. The new to me Culture novel for this year. Excellent.
The Aventures of Alyx by Joanna Russ. Good. Strange sword and sourcery that turns into a bittershot of science fiction.
Under the Skin by Michel Faber. [In Progress]
All Quiet on the Western Front by Erich Maria Remarque. Good.
Pietr the Latvian by Georges Simenon. Enjoyable and short.
Ocean of Sound: Aether Talk, Ambient Sound and Imaginary Worlds by David Toop. [In Progress]
